TruRanking rates every Division I men's basketball team using a tempo-free efficiency model that evaluates offensive and defensive performance on a per-possession basis. Rankings are updated daily throughout the season as new game results are processed.
How Our Rankings Work & Understanding the Metrics
Methodology
The TruRanking model analyzes every possession from every Division I game, measuring how efficiently each team scores and prevents scoring independent of pace. By removing tempo from the equation, we get a clear comparison between up-tempo teams and slower, more deliberate programs. Each team's rating also factors in strength of schedule, ensuring that beating strong opponents carries more weight than running up margins against weaker competition.
Key Metrics Explained
Rating is the overall team strength score on a normalized scale, combining offensive and defensive efficiency with schedule difficulty. Offensive Efficiency measures points scored per 100 possessions. Defensive Efficiency measures points allowed per 100 possessions. Efficiency Margin is the gap between the two, representing net performance. Strength of Schedule (SOS) reflects the average quality of opponents faced, expressed as a rating. Pace indicates the average number of possessions per game.
